Lockheed Martin C130 Calendar – Again!

A couple years ago I was lucky enough to accompany Ted Carlson on a C130 formation flight over North Carolina. I got a bunch of pretty good C130 images. Lockheed Martin has used one in their annual calendar every year since.

This year they used two. I love my job.

Love that Nikon lighting

This was a brutally backlit tent with the mid-morning sun beating down behind the flag and a river t oadd glare.

I put an SB800 flash on on of the tent poles camera right and controlled it with an SB900 on the camera. I would not have been able to change batteries on the slaved flash during the event so i used it sparingly. THe SB900 made it easy to switch back and forth.

But this salute is the “kiss the bride” moment at a change of command so i wanted plenty of light and and maybe a second shot.

A little skill got the shot, but it was nothing but luck that the child looked at me while her shoes, filled with water, slipped off her feet. Seven frames per second helped a lot too.

A very Special Wedding

I had the privilage of photgraphing Robbi and Anthony’s wedding yesterday. Far and away the most Christ-Centered wedding I have ever been a part of. I hope my meager efforts adequately capture this very special event.

That is One sexy fuel truck

It’s fun to make dramatic images of relatively boring things.

The task was to create some pictures that the Ground Support Equipment folks could dress the walls with in their new space.

I under-exposed the background and threw every light i had on the truck, I think it was 3 or four speedlights.

Winter In North Carolina – The blizzard of 2010

The sun was beautiful through the snow-covered trees this morning. As a photgrapher I felt guitly about not getting out there capturing an image.

But it’s cold and I’m not really good at that sort of image, and besides, I knew Wendy Moody would do a much better job.

Around noon I drug myself to the store for some essentials. I brought a camera in case I found inspiration. Here, I was able to capture the essence of of a big snow storm in Eastern North Carolina.

Five in a Row

The plan was to get a picture of all five Coast Guard H60 Helicopters in flight. Unfortunately, the sixth helo (not an H60) developed a generator problem right after takeoff so I had to get something from the ground.

I huffed and puffed out onto the ramp with a heavy bag of gear, not sure if someone was going to yell at me for being there.

I don think the formation flight would have been as good.

THe Christmas Picture

It took four or five attempts to capture this image. Two year-olds move around a bit.

I’m not happy with light on his left cheek but everyone else loves the picture.

Fog is your friend

This is one of my favorite photos from my day job.

Pretty easy, there was blanket of thick fog on the flight line. So thick the rising sun could barely cut through it.

Other people’s light

CNN Reporter Amber Lyon interviews Capt. Steven Poulan at the Mobile Command center for he BP Oil spill. I shot this in July 2010 when I got to spend a month working with the spill response.

I used the 50mm 1.8 wide open. That accounts for the sharpness and tissue thin depth of field, but the cool thing that I did not realize while i was shooting it was how the TV video light did such a nice jobof lighting the subject.
