Christmas trees

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

Wow, it worked just like the book said it would; I placed a gold reflector on the opposite side of the tree (from the child), an SB600 bounced off the reflector slaved to me D300s. I handed the kid an ornament and told him to put it on the tree. The idea is to create the illusion that his face is lit by the tree lights.

What a week.  I’m doing 30 days in Mobile Alabama in support of the BP Spill response. We were gatherd around the big screen watching Adm Allen on CNN when someone noticed MY photo on the video wall behind the host.

We love the beach

And I love my D2x. This shot is not possible with the D200. The D2/D3′s allow for flash at really high shutter speeds so i could take this shot at around 1/2000 sec. with the 50mm f1.8 wide open.

And isn’t that baby adorable?

Which do you like better? I prefer the first one but Ellen wants to print the one below as a HUGE canvas.

Who brings a camera to the Emergency Room?

One minute Teamir was showing us a dime and the next second, it was gone. So off we went.
Yeah. i’m sure i looked a little weird toting such a big camera but I figured there might be a cool picture or two.

Nothing special. But I do love what the 50mm f1.8 can do with available light. Teamir is fine. This too shall pass.

I attended a Bambi Cantrell wedding photography workshop a couple weeks ago. She does a lot of available/low light stuff with narrow depth of field.

A cute baby in a poorly lit bathroom is a perfect candidate for this technique.

An evening with my son and a bunch of other kids in a gymnasium covered with different kinds of blocks.
Could have been some great pictures, but not by me.
I was experimenting with low light and the speedy 50mm 1.8 Ellen got me for Christmas. Also experimented with a little ‘one light’ portraiture bouncing off a white wall. None of this stuff worked all that well. Hopefully there will be other opportunities,
The Best pf BlockFest is here.

This morning Teamir woke up at 5:00. He was not really ready to be awake and after a little time on my lap he got down and disappeared into the den. A few minute later ist was quiet. Glad i cleaned the rug yesterday.Teamir asleep on the carpet.

Just showing off

Monday, February 1st, 2010

i was shooting inside an 80,000 gallon fuel rank and someone asked why i wasn’t using flash on every shot. A good opportunity to show off the amazing low light capability of the Nikon D3.

i spun the ISO to around 1600 and let the light from the access hatch fall on the subject. I wasn’t really thinking, I should have asked him to turn on his light,
